Solo: The new drop from 3DR

It looks amazing! I am wondering if they still use an open source pixhawk flight controller or they moved to a closed source custom made one! For more info have a look here: http://3drobotics.com

A Drone In Iceland

A wonderful video made with a DJI Phantom 2 “drone” together with a Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal and a GoPro. The footage slowed down by 20%, giving it a slightly dreamy look! On top of that, shooting at 2.7k and then downsampling to 1080p gives you super sharp video that you can zoom into if needed. A very well done job that makes you want to go to Iceland immediately!

Israel’s Killer Robots

Israel is the world’s biggest exporter of military drones, used around the world for everything from surveillance to precision rocket attacks on speeding cars in remote locales. Israel’s drone program hasn’t stirred as much controversy as its American counterpart, but not because their targeted killings are any less fatal. VICE sent Simon Ostrovsky to a drone testing airfield in Israel to find out what their latest eye-in-the-sky can see. -From the YouTube video description

Working at 3D Robotics

“What it’s like to work at 3D Robotics: An introduction to the company through the stories of the people who work here”. Ok, I am gonna quite whatever I am doing and I can go there to work! I am not kidding! I strongly believe in this company and the future or autonomous air vehicles or drones or air robots or anything else you want to call it! Believe it or not, this movement will be the next Facebook or Google or any other happy tech company with huge amount of money!

Chris Anderson, on of the founders and currently the CEO of 3DRobotics is speaking about the present and future of drones into the military and mainly commercial area. The Drones are Coming, from Tijuana

From learning english by watching Family Guy to making a Drone company by using a cheap toaster oven! This is the story of 3DRobotics by the point of view of one of the owners, Jordi Muñoz. A Mexican that make his dream a reality. Sadly, this is not the best video on the net about this gifted man. I am unable to find his latest interview… so, enjoy this one!

Amazing Quadcopters

In a robot lab at TEDGlobal, Raffaello D’Andrea demos his flying quadcopters: robots that think like athletes, solving physical problems with algorithms that help them learn. In a series of nifty demos, D’Andrea show drones that play catch, balance and make decisions together — and watch out for an I-want-this-now demo of Kinect-controlled quads

Oblivion’s Bubbleship

You’ve already heard about the new movie called Oblivion. There are two trailers out there and today we have a featurette about the Bubbleship. Normally those movie ships and vehicles are made entirely with PCs, stop motion softwares, blue/green rooms and sometimes with scaled models. But this is not the case here. They decided to build an entire ship from scratch just to shoot a few scenes! Sadly the video is not going into details of the build process, design, selection of materials etc. Still it looks nice and shiny. Plus, it is a noteworthy references of what they made and the happiness sourced from the creation process

And in case that you don’t know the movie, above is the first trailer. In theatres: April 19th, 2013

Rise of the Drones! Are you Prepared?

Sometimes the evolution of technology and engineering brings to life concepts that firing huge debates between people with different perspectives of life and visions of the future. Among others, one of those debates has to do with UAVs or Drones. These unmanned flying robots that fit in different sizes and architectures started as sciences fiction figures and transformed to actual shapes. Currently they are well know as “cheap” surveillance platforms for military use and evolved, sadly, to lethal machines. But there are other uses too. From information gathering in critical areas (like nuclear disasters or earthquakes and floods) to tools for amazing shoots in movie scenes and a totally new category of hobby! Their capabilities of flying higher and for more time as well as the ability to perform complex tasks faster and precisely will be the future. But they will come to our cities and possibly our own backyards? Do we have to afraid them or possibly the next killer app for Drones will be not killing but helping us? So, are you prepared for the future?
